“Smells are surer than sights and sounds to make the heart strings crack.” That’s the motto of Illumens, a family run company based in Suffolk making the most elegantly perfumed candles and diffusers. Caroline Hardy and her partner develop the fragrances themselves and kindly sent me a selection of their best-selling scented products to share with you.
Inside beautifully illustrated packaging are handmade scented candles and diffusers to create ambiance, mood and warmth for different occasions. “Each one of our collections of scented candles and diffusers is a very personal reflection of what we love, our experiences and explorations.”Illumen’s currently have five eclectic collections; Rouge d’origine, Abbaye, Winter, Times and Places and Folio. With Mother’s Day approaching, I can't think of a more beautifully boxed gift then these to sent a sweet message.
I’ve been using their candles and diffusers to fragrance my home and I think I've found the perfect matches for each living space and occasion.
We’re a flat that likes to host; dinner parties, drinks, visiting friends and family, there always seems to be something going on. I love opening the door to people, filling the flat with laugher and watching everyone slowly gravitate towards the living room for the evening. No.4 from the Portfolio collection is great for creating a warm and cosy atmosphere for theses chilly evenings. It’s a warm, woody scent that’s slightly spiced.
Illumen’s candles are imbued with fragrance oil as high as the manufacturing process allows and their candles have a burn time of around 40 fragrant hours - perfect for an ambient evening in. Held within simple yet decorative glass holders, these are candles designed to stay out display.
The Nutmeg & Cinnamon scented candle from Ilumen’s first collection, ‘Rouge’ has a sweeter spiced fragrance; this tangy aroma also works really well to freshen and 'lift' the living room. Caroline described this collection as “a library of my own favourite fragrances - the ones I wanted to use at home.”
As my friends and family can testify, I’m not the best person at being able to truly unwind. There always seems to be something I feel compelled to turn my attention to. Ideas often crystallise as I begin to relax, the dust settles and I’m up again finding a note book to write everything down. I’ve had to accept that finding time to switch off and let go isn’t going to come naturally for me, I’ll need a bit of help to escape the frenetic pulse of the city, the daily tasks and the spontaneous challenges that come my way.
One thing that helps me to unwind is creating an atmosphere of comfort and relaxation in my bedroom. This gorgeous Poire candle from Illumens’ Abbaye Collection is my favourite and has become a central part in my relaxation routine. Lighting a candle is not only a night-time ritual to enjoy, I love seeing the light flicker and the shadows dance on the wall but above all, it’s the scent that provides a sweet soothing fragrance that helps me unwind and gently fall into a sleepy slumber.
Each collection from Illumen’s notes the inspiration for the fragrance. The description creates an image which lingers in my mind when the scent fills the room. “Inspired by a visit to an abbey in Picardy and by a lifelong love of the French countryside,” The Abbaye Collection has a gentle, soft, sweet scent and the creamy glass holder makes it the perfect bedroom accessory.
I’ve been using Illumen’s diffusers to keep the flat’s living areas smelling fresh and welcoming. I’ve been using the No.1 Teacup aromatic taper in our hallway and I’ve completely fallen in love with this one! Coming downstairs each day to its sweet floral scent and ping of fresh tea always puts me in a good mood to start the day. Illumen’s tapers last for around 12 weeks continuous use so you can have a new scent for every season.
Illumen's products look great and smell even better. The scents are so well matches for different areas of the home and your play on your senses to create smooth and create ambiance.
