What's in a bag? Everything.

The handbag. Its contents is a collage of you and your life; your daily necessities, monthly treats and year on year memories.  In those pockets we forget exist are month old cinema tickets, a crumpled easy jet boarding pass, a go-to lipstick, notebook with illegible scribbles, some flyer you grabbed exiting the tube, the list goes on. Of course larger, more accessible pockets have everything you need to function; keys, wallet, phone, flask, book. My point being, we girls love our handbags because they’re a little piece of us; a first aid kit, a daily ‘helping hand’ and let’s not forget, often the curiosity of our male friends.

And so, a handbag is many things because we’re constantly on the move; agreeing to last minute nights outs, and spontaneously buying. Our handbag needs to be both functional and stylish if it’s going to secure its place as our everyday accessory. I’ve recently discovered a brand which offers both these things.

Kate Sheridan

Kate Sheridan is an independent label creating stylish, unconventional bags and accessories. Their signature, ‘no nonsense’ approach means their designs display both fresh prints; including geometric patterns and bold block colours as well as have an inherent functionality. This makes them a top choice for those who love an edgy, offbeat yet quality, crafted product.

Kate Sheridan sent me their Palm Bag in Navy. It has a sleek, satchel-like shape and a dark, thick-cut leather strap which can be adjusted for a bespoke fit.

The bag itself opens up like a big pocket, creating a large space for you to keep your belongings. With no fussy zip or unnecessary flap, it is secured by simply folding the bag over and fastening it with a supple yet strong, vegtan leather strap and statement silver buckle.

A pocket on the front of the bag allows for storage of small items and is neatly concealed when the bag folds over.  Sewn into the lining of the main compartment is another intimate space. A zip pocket at the back of the bag is ideal for keeping your phone or travel cards.

The bag is modern and minimal. It has an overall ‘rough chicness’ to its design created by the clean lines of the central leather strap on the navy cotton fabric. With quality construction and beautiful attention to detail, the leather shoulder strap connects to the bag with chunky silver clips on either side. It’s not a 'girly bag', but it does have a feisty feminine charm.

The cotton Palm Bag has a softer shape than an 'all leather' bag which allows for versatile styling; it looks great worn over the shoulder or across the body. It’s a bag that can transcend the season; the waxed cotton outer means it can easily defy the UK weather and the warm, soft-grey inside lining provides perfect cushioning for your items and rests nicely against your side.

I’m wearing the bag over a vintage red skirt and a grey T-shirt. The dark navy colour of the Palm bag looks great with other block colours however the simplicity of the design means it would work just as well with abstract prints and patterns.

All Kate Sheridan products are designed in house. Traditional print methods are used for her designs and quality British fabrics and Italian leather are sourced for each bag and accessory. Kate Sheridan bags are sold internationally with stockists all over the world.

A favourite of the press, the Kate Sheridan Hex Bag have been featured on Telegraph Fashion as one of the 50 most versatile black handbags today while other designs have been including in 'accessory lineups' in Cosmopolitan UK.

About the designer

In 2001, together with friend and St.Martins textile design graduate, Helen Minns, Kate launched the label ‘Sheridan + Minns’. Retailing in avant-garde boutiques in Europe and the Far East, the label was well received and featured in fashion press worldwide. Soon after, the brand was distilled into ‘Kate Sheridan.’

The growing popularity of the unique Kate Sheridan label, with its coveted shapes and quirky disposition, has seen Kate commissioned to create her own diffusion line named ‘what Kate did next..,’ by Topshop. She has also designed exclusive fabrics for Urban Outfitters and been asked to produce a print for the National Gallery which was applied not only to handbags but also to a range of lifestyle items.

Kate Sheridan's high-end collection of bags and accessories are incredibly stylish and practical. Crafted with quality materials, they are perfect bags to have by your side this season or to gift to someone special.  Visit Kate Sheridan's London boutique on 112 Lower Clapton Road.
