I first discovered Kate Marsden’s work a few months ago at Spitalfields Market, Shoreditch when I came across her wonderfully colourful stall. Her vibrant and unique designs immediately caught my eye.

Kate is a textile designer and her brand, Made By Mrs M, specialises in modern mid-century textile designs from which she composes a range of striking fabrics and products. Her fabric designs are fashioned into a variety of stylish goods from women’s fashion accessories, to contemporary homeware and beautiful stationary sets.

I bought a set of Kate’s fabric-covered brooches in her Southbank fabric design. This fabric was featured in a selection of Made by Mrs M designs which were showcased as part of the Royal Academy of Arts’ RAted range in 2014 for emerging British design talent. Bright colours and cleans lines used in an Pop-Art like style make these brooches fantastically fun; perfect for brightening up and adding a little bit of individuality to an outfit. With the added attraction that they feature landmark images from my current city - London, I had to have a set. I had one pinned to my handbag though  it's been recently relocated to my winter coat in preparation for the season ahead.

Many of Made by Mrs M’s designs are inspired by mid-century architecture and feature some of London’s most iconic buildings such as Park Hill, Battersea Power Station and South Bank. Kate’s choice to feature  mid-century architecture in her designs was with "a desire to make unloved buildings, which were generally not considered to be attractive or fashionable, attractive again."

The buildings she uses lend themselves well to repeated patterns; "I’ll often spot a building from the train and want to get out and photograph it as I can see its potential immediately." She often pairs these with bold block colours; hot pink, orange, olive green and electric blue, this highlights the strong shapes of the architecture and introduces a retro style.

Kate mixes up the composition of her designs with complementing patterns; "As architecture surrounds us all of the time, I believe it sits well with other imagery within a design – florals for example." I absolutely love these Made by Mrs M reversible cushion knits. With the masculine buildings on one side and the feminine floral design on the other, this playful juxtaposition make these cushions a striking statement accessory for any sofa or chair.
